Upstate Parent “20 Questions with Singer Angela Easterling”

BY Angie Campbell, Upstate Parent, May 4, 2015
Chances are, if you're familiar with the Upstate's music scene, you're familiar with country/folk/alternative music singer and songwriter Angela Easterling. With five albums on her resume, having had songs featured in commercials and on the TV series "Horsepower" on Animal Planet, and with frequent appearances at fairs and festivals throughout the Southeast, the busy Greer resident is also a devoted mother to her 2-year-old son, Harrison.

1.What's the funniest thing your son has ever done?

He tells everyone to "Drive safe" when they are leaving. It sounds pretty funny coming from a 2 year old. We live on a farm and when we go somewhere, he waves at the cows and says, "Bye cows. Drive safe."

2.What quality do you most admire in others?

I admire people with intellectual curiosity who always want to learn more about life and the world around them.

3.What's your favorite childhood memory?

It is hard to think of anything specifically, more of just a feeling of being free and having fun, without needing to accomplish anything. It felt like the whole world was open to me.

4.What's your favorite food?

Really good Mexican food.

5. What's the best place to take the kids?

Greenville Drive games. I am a huge Red Sox fan and love having the minor league team here. It is the perfect family activity.

6.What's your super power?

Spelling.

7.What is your favorite TV show?

It's hard to choose between "Breaking Bad" and "Mad Men."

8.When you were younger, what did you want to be?

An actress on Broadway, and a singer.

9.What's your favorite restaurant?

The Strip Club 104 in Greer, and Grits & Groceries in Belton.

10.What are your hobbies?

I find exercise to be a great stress reliever, and love going to classes at my local Y. I like to read, to travel, and I enjoy going to baseball games.

11.What is something important life has taught you?

To let things go. The music business has highs and lows of being praised one minute and rejected the next. You have to really let all of that go and try to keep moving on toward the next thing.

12.What is your favorite family ritual?

Ours is still a new family, so we are just setting our traditions now, I guess. We just enjoy simple things like going out to eat with the three of us every Sunday afternoon.

13.What always makes you laugh?

The sound of my son laughing. He has the best giggle. It is contagious.

14.What would surprise people about you?

That I am very shy. As much as I love to perform for an audience, offstage, I generally tend to be very introverted.

15.What has surprised you most about being a parent?

How fulfilling it is watching them grow and learn how to do, basically, everything. All the things he thinks and comes up with, while he's trying to figure out the world. It makes me look at life with new eyes.

16.What is your favorite indulgence?

A really good Manhattan.

17.Whom do you most admire?

I admire my grandparents, Helen and Harold Hammett. They were two of the most intelligent, hard-working, multi-faceted, and yet, humble people I have ever known.

18.Early bird or night owl?

Night owl. Because I'm a musician, of course!

19.If you could have dinner with anyone, who would you choose?

Loretta Lynn and Stevie Nicks.

20.What is the best gift parents can give their children?

Spend time with them and really be present. In this day and age, when we are all buried in our phones and other activities, I want to try to make to make sure my son never feels like he is invisible to me. I want him to know that he matters. I also think this is the best gift I can give myself as a parent, to really experience my little one's childhood.
